What is Sustainability?
Sustainability is a normative concept for a dynamic long-term balance between humans and nature in an ever-advancing world civilisation.
Sustainable development is an approach to economic activity and human development that aims for a society where living conditions and resources meet human needs without undermining planetary integrity. It aims to balance the needs of the economy, environment, and society. It refers to the many processes and pathways to achieve sustainability.
The term "sustainable development" was first used internationally in 1980 in the IUCN/UNEP/WWF World Conservation Strategy. The 1987 United Nations World Commission on Environment and Development issued its report Our Common Future, commonly called the Brundtland Report. It defined sustainable development as a development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. This contains two key concepts: the concept of 'needs', in particular, the essential needs of the world's poor, to which overriding priority should be given; and the idea of limitations imposed by the state of technology and social organization on the environment's ability to meet present and future needs.
The 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (Earth Summit) in Rio de Janeiro placed the concept of sustainable development on the international agenda. This led to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adopted in 2015 by the UN General Assembly to be achieved in 2030.
It is normal for the International Environment Forum, as a Bahá'Ã-inspired professional organization for environment and sustainability, to promote the unity of the human race in a sustainable, ever-advancing world civilization that preserves the ecological balance of the planet. It places serving humankind above worldly interests, rejects the opiate of consumerism, and turns away from materialistic ideologies and the worldviews they aggressively promote. It aims to build upon the most foundational qualities in humanity, ones for which the world stands in great need: unity, trustworthiness, mutual support, collaboration, fellow feeling, selflessness, commitment to truth, a sense of responsibility, a thirst to learn, the love of an all-embracing heart.
Sustainable Development Goals
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted in 2015 to be achieved by 2030. The seventeen goals cover all the main dimensions of sustainable development, and are intended to be seen as an integrated whole. Unlike Agenda 21 adopted in 1992, the SDGs included defined targets to be achieved, and indicators to measure progress towards those targets. Unfortunately at present, governments are far behind in achieving the goals they set for themselves.
The 17 SDGs are:
Poverty - No poverty (SDG 1)
Food/hunger - Zero hunger (SDG 2)
Health and well-being (SDG 3)
Education (SDG 4)
Gender equality (SDG 5)
Water - Clean water and sanitation (SDG 6)
Energy - Affordable and clean energy (SDG 7)
Work - Decent work (SDG 8)
and economic growth (SDG 8)
Industry, innovation and infrastructure (SDG 9)
Inequality - Reduced inequalities (SDG 10)
Communities - Sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11)
Consumption - Responsible consumption (SDG 12)
and production (SDG 12)
Climate change - Climate action (SDG 13)
Oceans - Life below water (SDG 14)
and Freshwater ecosystems
Biodiversity - Life on land (SDG 15)
Peace, justice, and strong institutions (SDG 16)
Partnerships for the goals (SDG 17)

IEF and the Sustainable Development Goals
The International Environment Forum has been engaged with the process of developing the UN 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) since the early stages, including inputs to the Rio+20 process and submissions to on-line consultations, listed below in reverse chronological order. Its focus now is on the implementation of the SDGs. Several of the papers below describe approaches to the SDGs for individuals, communities and businesses.
IEF Toolkit for the SDGS
This toolkit contains a selection of SDG targets relevant to local communities, the SDGs rewritten for personal use, SDG targets that businesses can contribute to implementing, and a selection of Baha'i-inspired texts for each SDG.
